Chronic Headaches Resolved After Upper Cervical Care – Jim’s Story

Posted in Head Disorders on Mar 24, 2026

Many people who suffer from chronic headaches and migraines never realize that the root cause may actually come from the upper cervical spine, the area where the head meets the neck. The top two bones in the neck—the atlas (C1) and axis (C2)—sit directly beneath the brainstem and help protect the delicate neurological pathways that control the head, face, and jaw. When these bones become misaligned, often after injuries like whiplash, sports trauma, or repetitive strain, they can place abnormal stress on the brainstem and surrounding nerves. This irritation can contribute to chronic muscle tension, nerve irritation, and abnormal signaling in the trigeminal nerve system, which is one of the main nerve pathways responsible for headaches and migraines. When the upper neck is properly aligned and the nervous system is allowed to function normally, many patients experience dramatic improvements in headaches, migraines, and other related symptoms.

My name is Jim, and for most of my life headaches were just a normal part of my day.

Honestly, I can’t remember a time growing up when I didn’t have headaches. They were so constant that I eventually just got used to living with them. I work in the food industry and own a business, so my job is pretty strenuous—long hours, a lot of physical work, not always the best sleep, and definitely not always the best diet.

Because of that, I always assumed my headaches were just part of the lifestyle.

I figured it was stress, lack of sleep, working too much, or something related to diet. I tried everything I could think of to fix it. I experimented with changing what I ate. I tried cutting certain foods out. I tried reducing my hours when possible. I tried improving my routine.

But no matter what I did, nothing ever really solved the problem.

Eventually I reached a point where I stopped trying to figure it out and just pushed through it. My mindset was basically: “Just keep grinding and deal with it.” I had headaches almost every day, but I just kept going.

Then one day I started wondering again, what is actually wrong with me?

I remember scrolling through TikTok and searching something like “what’s wrong with my neck,” because I always had this constant tightness in my neck and shoulders. My neck was always stiff, and I felt tension running from my neck into my head.

That’s when I started seeing videos about upper cervical chiropractic.

The videos immediately caught my attention because a lot of the symptoms sounded exactly like what I was experiencing—tightness in the upper neck, chronic headaches, tension, and brain fog. I started watching more and more of Dr. Drew Hall’s videos, and it really started making sense.

As I watched them, I kept thinking about all the things I had already tried that didn’t work. Diet changes didn’t fix it. Working fewer hours didn’t fix it. Nothing seemed to address the actual cause.

So when I heard Dr. Hall say that if this sounded like you, you should find an upper cervical chiropractor near you, I decided to look it up.

And sure enough, Dr. Drew Hall and Neckwise Clinics came up.

At that point I figured I had nothing to lose, so I scheduled an appointment.

The first visit was interesting because it was very different from anything I had experienced before. They took very precise measurements and imaging to determine exactly what was happening in my upper neck.

Then when it came time for the first correction, something surprising happened.

It didn’t feel like anything dramatic happened at all.

There was no twisting, no popping, and no pulling on my neck. It was a very gentle and precise correction. When I stood up afterward, I honestly thought, “That was kind of strange… did anything even happen?”

But then I laid down for a few minutes afterward, and something really unusual started happening.

I felt like my entire body was resetting.

It’s hard to describe, but it felt like my body was recalibrating or reorganizing itself. It was a very strange sensation, but not in a bad way.

And then something even more incredible happened.

My headache was gone.

But it wasn’t just the headache that disappeared. For the first time in years, I felt clear-headed. The tension in my neck was gone. The fog that I didn’t even realize I had been living with lifted.

It was honestly shocking.

Since then, things have continued to improve.

The corrections held, and my body started functioning normally again. The constant tension that used to sit in my neck and shoulders disappeared. The daily headaches that I had lived with for most of my life went away.

The only headaches I’ve had since then are occasional dehydration headaches, which go away after drinking water.

But the chronic tension headaches that used to control my life are completely gone.

It’s honestly pretty amazing.

What’s even more surprising is that it’s now been about a year since I started care, and I’m still headache-free.

For someone who had headaches nearly every day of their life, that’s something I never thought would be possible.

Looking back now, it’s hard to believe how long I lived with that problem without realizing there might be a structural issue in my neck causing it.

Upper Cervical Care uses precise imaging and no twisting of the neck

At Sarasota Upper Cervical, our goal is to determine whether a structural misalignment in the upper cervical spine is interfering with the nervous system. To do this, our office uses advanced 3-D CBCT imaging to precisely measure the position of the atlas and axis at the base of the skull. This imaging allows us to determine the exact direction and degree of misalignment unique to each patient. From there, we perform extremely precise upper cervical corrections designed to restore proper alignment and nervous system function. These corrections are very gentle and involve no twisting, popping, or pulling on the neck, allowing the body to naturally begin healing once interference to the nervous system is removed.
